A project over the last ten years was to create a sanctuary for thinking, writing, fishing and working at Great Barrier Island in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. As mid-century modern afficianados, it seemed fitting that we play with a south seas island ‘tiki’ theme. While off the grid, Great Barrier Island now enjoys cellphone coverage making it a perfect place for an executive retreat with a difference.
About the Tiki House
The kitsch, modernist take on “tiki culture” symbolizes an escape from the confines of an often oppressive western world. When American soldiers returned home from World War II, they brought with them stories and souvenirs from the South Pacific which had inspired them and gave them respite from war. This contributed to the mid-century American explosion of tiki-mania which infused the hospitality, home design and even the music scene with a unique pop cultural aesthetic representing a unique and intoxicating way of life – simple, natural and exotic.
